Dr. Brown's Diet Black Cherry Soda

My wife had a hankering for a ruben tonight, so I swung by Cecil's Deli:

Cecil's Sodas.

Brand: Dr. Brown's Diet Black Cherry Soda.

Origin: College Point, NY.

Purchase Place: Cecil's Deli, St. Paul, MN.

Sweetener: Aspartame.

Review: I forgot that I tried the non-diet version last year, and it wasn't the best. Well, this one was about the same. It was oddly creamy, which was strange in a black cherry soda. It had a decent amount of flavor for a diet soda, but the flavor was strange. It needed to be less creamy and more smooth (even though it tasted of "cream," it still had a decent "bite," and that was an odd combination). I'm giving it a slightly lower score than it's non-diet version.

Score: 3 out of 10.

Dr. Brown's Black Cherry Soda

Last night, we grabbed some sandwiches from Cecil's Deli just down the street here in St. Paul. They have a big cooler with sodas, so I grabbed one to take home.

Sweetener: High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Review: This was somewhere between a black cherry soda and a black cherry CREME soda. It needed to pick a side. It was too smooth to be a good black cherry soda, but it wasn't smooth enough to be a good black cherry creme soda. I was disappointed.

Score: 4 out of 10.

Dr. Brown's Draft Style Root Beer

My wife had a craving for a ruben with fries the other night, so I headed to Cecil's Deli just down the street in Highland Park to pick up supper.

Cecil's has a fair amount of individual bottles and cans of root beer and other sodas in their cooler, so I'll have to grab something new every time I'm there.

Sweetener: High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Review: It had a pretty "classic" root beer flavor. There was just a little bite, and just a nice subtle hint of anise. There could be more vanilla flavor, and it could be a bit more creamy, but it's decent overall. It's not trying to be anything fancy, so even though it's not stellar, I think it's made to please a lot of people. I'll give this just a slightly-better-than-average score...
