Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer

I never got a photo of my last soda in Vegas. (Actually, I never got a photo of my final few bottles.) My last soda was Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer.

Brand: Dad's Old Fashioned Root Beer.

Origin: Jasper, IN.

Purchase Place: Rocket Fizz, Las Vegas, NV.

Sweetener: Cane sugar.

Review: Too "smokey." It almost tasted burnt. I wanted to like this a lot more, but I was really disappointed. It didn't even taste like root beer to me - it was like bad cola. No thanks. (I think I'll have to try Dad's again because I don't remember it being this bad when I've had it in the past. Stay tuned for an update on this.)

Score: 3 out of 10.

  1. no surprise there. I'd suspect that any of the mainstream root beers would rate low. (A&W, Dads, Barq's, Hires, Mug).

I'm curious to read reviews on some of the slightly higher reputation root beers (IBC, Thomas Kemper, Boyland, Stewart's, Henry Weinhard, Virgil's, etc...) and see how they stack up to the microbrews that you've been covering.

I eventually expect, nay, DEMAND a review of the arcade video game: Root Beer Tapper.

Seriously though, love the reviews. Keep 'em coming.

    1. nrmrvrk, I actually have a Thomas Kemper review coming in a day or 2! And check my "labels" in the sidebar for Boylans and Virgils - those are 2 that I've had. Thanks for the note!

  2. Is it possible that your taste buds got altered somehow? Like drinking oj after brushing teeth combo type of thing? I will give this one a try, though I have no idea how "smokey" tastes like.

    1. Ha! Nope, I drank this at a "normal" time of day. I'll have to try it again to make sure I didn't have a bad bottle or something.
